ABOUT THE PROJECT

6/18/17-7/23/17

My project addresses the Children of Pennrose, Trenton.
I wanted to change the concept of how many of the children
were ‘bored’ during the summer. The summer is supposed to be a time where children can enjoy doing things they love. So, I thought, what's better than some exercise and crafts. I wanted my activities to be a way kids could enjoy themselves by doing things they like. I knew that indoor exercise and arts and crafts were not hobbies that everyone enjoyed, but my activities brought opportunities for those who didn’t have much experience with them.

FUNDRAISING

I had created a budget that would would have accounted for the activities I would include throughout the course of my project. My budget was roughly $350. To achieve accumulating this sum of money, I decided to bake and sell cakes.

ARTS & CRAFTS

Throughout the course of my project, I planned many arts and crafts. A favorite amongst the kids was the slime activity: the children had the opportunity to make slime from scratch. Rather than arts, it became clear that the children liked crafts much better.

INDOOR EXERCISE

I had so much fun creating indoor exercise games for the kids, and they had a lot of fun participating in them. Their favorite was the "cone" game. In this game, they had to compete with each other for the cone. Whoever who didn't get the cone had to pick out of a jar full of hard exercises.

Guidelines

  1. Make sure you plan everything ahead of time

  2. Schedule different time slots to target specific age groups and try to stick to the schedule.

  3. Get to know the kids at personal level if possible. This will allow you to understand them more, which will help you to create activities that they will like and actively participate in.

  4. The activities must pertain to arts, crafts and indoor exercise.

  5. Be kind to the kids. Do not get frustrated when things do not go as expected.

  6. Important thing to consider "always be present on time".

  7. Always look for a fun filling activities so they won't get bored.

  8. Pay full attention to the kids while engaging them.

  9. If  you have any questions or concerns please reach out to the facility coordinator.

SUSTAINABILITY

For each upcoming summer, my project advisor will be in charge of appointing people to take over that year's ACIE program. The pictures shown to the left include samples of activity plans and guidelines. The guidelines are essentially a set of self-directed instructions that will help the person give an idea of how the activities should be executed. In the future, the people or person my project advisor picks is not intended to copy what I did with the children exactly, for the kids next summer would be bored by doing the same activities again. So, what I did should be a model –expectation- for them to follow.

Wrapping Everything Up

I learned that although it may be easy to create pre-conceived ideas in your head, these ideas are almost never accurate.
Every child is different and each of them has their own unique strengths. I got to know every single one of the kids and
they were all so talented. Some of them were so strong: one of the youngest ones there could lift me up! Some of the girls
were such amazing gymnasts. Some of the kids were really good at math. Every kid has their own special ability.
Furthermore, although some of these children were not approachable in the beginning, they ended up being the most
thoughtful kids I have ever met. I learned that you have to have an open mind when talking to them.
